Being Healthy Is Annoying
I know I may not speak for everyone with that headline, but I’m sure a lot of people will be able to relate.
Nowadays we’re bombarded with so much information on how to take care of ourselves, or what we need to do in order to be optimally healthy, it’s hard to keep up.
From influencers telling you not to eat bread, to gurus telling you to meditate 2 hours a day, to “science based” people telling you that drinking diet coke is OK. If you’re a normal person living a normal life just trying to figure out what you can do to be just a little bit healthier, the internet can be overwhelming and confusing. And you probably have no idea who to trust..
But have no fear! Follow me and you will be saved! (No, just kidding!)
But I am here to hopefully provide you will a balanced perspective and fill you in on a bit of my experience.
For the majority of my adult life, I have been a health conscious person. I go to the gym, I drink water, I eat healthy (most of the time), I try to get sufficient sleep, limit alcohol intake, I even limit my social media exposure. And even though I’m very used to this lifestyle at this point, I still find it annoying on a regular basis. So I imagine for the average person, it’s even more annoying or maybe even daunting.
It’s annoying to have to go to the gym when all you want to do is curl up in a ball and watch something on Netflix. It’s annoying to cook a meal at home when you’re tired when you can just order in and avoid the dishes. It’s annoying to avoid eating bread when it’s so much easier to just, not avoid it. It’s annoying to make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. The list goes on and on.
So what is the alternative? Well, it’s not great either.
Bad sleep, unhealthy food, always eating out, weight gain, not feeling well, dehydrated, etc. Being unhealthy is annoying too, and I would argue, even more so than taking steps to prioritize your well-being.
So what do you do? Who’s advice do you follow?
Well… Your own.
Most people intuitively know that it’s the basics that will make the biggest differences, and that’s annoying. It’s annoying because most of us would prefer some quick fix, the magic supplement, or the magic 6-minute-abs routine, but at the end of the day, it’s always the basics.
What are the basics? You already know them.
Eating healthy, well rounded meals.
Prioritizing 7-9 hours of sleep. (I understand this one may be harder for parents with young children or babies).
A consistent exercise routine. (1-3 days a week).
If you’re able to cover these 3 bases most of the time, it will get you most of the way there. And once keeping these bases covered becomes second nature, then you can start to introduce smaller things to give yourself that extra edge. Blue light glasses in the evening, limiting social media use, diet tweaks (learning what foods work better for you and which don’t), scheduling an outdoor walk with your significant other (actually, do that anyway), 5 minute breathing exercises, etc. The list goes on here as well.
But quickly bringing it back the the main 3, cover those bases, and all the other things tend to naturally fall into place without much extra effort. The small stuff is always good, but it’s the basics that will make the biggest difference.
Being healthy is annoying because of the extra effort or changes to routine, but so is being sick, overweight, and in pain.
So keep it chill!
Don’t worry about what the 20 y/o fitness influencer has to say. Focus on you, focus on the basics, you’ll be fine.
